LONG ISLAND CHILDRENS MUSEUM OPENS DREAM EXHIBIT!

Night Journeys Explores Sleep, Dreams and Bedtime Rituals Around the World

Bedtime preparation provides the transition between the busy social activities of day and the solitary, sometimes scary experience of nighttime and sleep.  For many families, bedtime is marked by comforting and peaceful experiences, as well as fears and frustrations. Night Journeys: An Adventure in the World of Sleep and Dreams at the Long Island Childrens Museum takes families on a fascinating journey through the world of bedtime rituals and routines and into the nighttime experience of sleep and dreams.  Combining hands-on activities, collection objects, working models, displays and animated video, the bi-lingual exhibition helps young visitors and their families improve their understanding of the sleep experience.  Night Journeys opens at LICM on Friday, June 11 and runs through September 12.

Summer is the perfect time to bring Night Journeys to LICM, said Executive Director Suzanne LeBlanc.   Sleep routines that families have established during the year can change drastically at this time of year as bedtimes become more relaxed and upcoming camp and vacation plans provide plenty of dream or nightmare material.  The exhibit theme will resonate deeply with parents and children alike.

Families visiting Night Journeys enter a whimsical bedroom setting where they are introduced to sleeping places from many parts of the world.  Children can lie down on an ancient Egyptian bed or try out a headrest from Japan or Somalia.  They can carry dolls in a Mexican rebozo or a Native American cradleboard.  Children can peek into miniatures of unusual sleeping places and explore bedtime security and comfort by putting dolls to sleep with stories and lullabies from around the world.

A fantastic giant bed serves as the centerpiece in this area, offering kids the opportunity to examine protective sleep charms used around the world and take on one of the most common bedtime fears. As they shine a giant flashlight under the bed, they will turn a frightening monster into an ordinary pile of socks and toys.  Hands-on activities, cross-cultural comparisons and imaginary play provide children and parents with the opportunity to examine the role bedtime rituals and routines play in their lives and compare them with families around the world.

Families continue their journey into the world of sleep and dreams as they pass under an arch of clouds and stars and past sleeping and dreaming animals.  Here, visitors explore the active state of sleep in an animated video that shows eye movement, body movement and brain activity during sleep.  A nearby station compiles the dreams of adults and kids; allowing family members to compare dreams theyve had against others.

Finally, the exhibit explores different approaches to dream interpretation by people around the world.  In a series of interactive exhibits families will be able to share a dream over breakfast in the tradition of the Senoi people of Malaysia, turn a scroll to learn about dream books used in China, and feed a bad dream to Baku, the Japanese dream eater.  As they leave the gallery, visitors can meet some famous dreamers like Frankensteins author Mary Shelley, whose dreams have changed our world.

Text in English and Spanish is written in a conversational style to spark interaction between children and adults.  While learning an interesting array of scientific and cultural facts about sleep, children and parents can improve their understanding of the sleep experience. Information written for parents about sleep includes tips for talking to children about sleep-related problems.

Long Island Children’s Museum has planned a variety of themed workshops and performances to complement the key themes and content areas of Night Journeys.  Among the special Night Journeys programming planned for visitors are performances by the Dance Visions company of “Dreamscape,” a dance/theater piece offering glimpses into the world of dreams.  The contemporary dance company will perform on Saturday, July 21, Tuesday, July 27, Wednesday, July 28 and Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 1:30 p.m. in the LICM Theater.   Children will have the chance to listen to capture their dream images for keeps on a painted pillowcase in our Sweet Dreams workshop.  The program is offered every weekday afternoon (July 1-August 31) from 1-4 p.m.   Visitors are invited to learn how great artists depicted scenes of night and darkness on Thursday, July 22 at LICM’s  Into the Night workshop.

LICM saves the best for last, when it hosts Pajamarama on Thursday, August 26 from noon- 4p.m.  Kids are invited to join in an end of the summer pajama party where they’ll meet some favorite bedtime storybook characters, create fun crafts and participate in a variety of activities celebrating sleep and dreams.    (View the LICM events calendar at www.licm.org for additional Night Journeys programs.)

Night Journeys provides an environment in which young peoples most comforting bedtime habits, persistent nighttime fears and compelling curiosities about sleep and dreams can be explored in a humorous, supportive way.

The traveling exhibition was developed by The Brooklyn Childrens Museum for the Minnesota Childrens Museum and the Youth Museum Exhibit Collaborative (YMEC).  The exhibition was funded by YMEC with additional support provided by the Spunk Fund, Inc.

All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City, NY.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  General Museum admission: $10 for adults and children over 1 year old. Under 1 year old FREE. $9 seniors.  Additional fees for theater and special programs may apply.  For additional information, contact 516-224-5800.

Night Journeys: An Adventure in the World of Sleep and Dreams

Through September 12

Take a fascinating journey through the world of bedtime rituals and routines and into the nighttime experience of sleep and dreams. Visitors enter into a whimsical bedroom setting where they are introduced to sleeping places from many parts of the world. Lie down on an ancient Egyptian bed, try out a headrest from Japan or Somalia or carry dolls using a Mexican rebozo. Peek into unusual sleeping places, shine giant flashlights under the bed to scare away the monsters and explore bedtime rituals from around the world.

Visitors continue their journey into the world of sleep and dreams by exploring the “active” state of sleep in an animated video that shows eye movement, body movement and brain activity during sleep. Next, compare some of your dreams to those of both children and adults and see what they mean. Explore different approaches to dream interpretation by people around the world. Learn about dream books from China, feed a bad dream to Baku—the Japanese dream eater and see how a family in Malaysia share their dreams over breakfast.

All Ages. Free with museum admission.

This traveling exhibit was developed by The Brooklyn Children’s Museum for the Minnesota Children’s Museum and The Youth Museum Exhibit Collaborative (YMEC). The exhibition was funded by YMEC with additional support provided by the Spunk Fund, Inc.
